Salt Lake Folk School was founded by Lucas Stuart. For years, he has led backpacking trips in places like Yosemite, Yellowstone, and Alaska. Those trips were deeply meaningful and changed the way he saw the world. In a time when many people feel increasingly isolated, those trips offered a chance to slow down, learn new skills, and form real connections with others.

When Lucas moved to Salt Lake City, he realized that experiences like this are common for kids, but much harder to find as adults. He wanted to create something that brought that same sense of curiosity, connection, and hands-on learning into everyday life.

So he started Salt Lake Folk School.

Salt Lake Folk School is a place where adults can work with their hands and meet thoughtful people at the same time. Our workshops focus on practical, creative skills. Things like wood carving, collage, sewing, drawing, cooking, and more.

The goal is to create evenings that feel different from the usual routine. Instead of scrolling your phone or watching TV, you can spend a couple of hours learning something new, making something with your hands, and having good conversations with people who are just as curious as you are.

Before moving to Utah, Lucas attended art school in New York City. One of the things he loved most about that environment was how creative communities form when people gather around ideas, projects, and shared curiosity. Salt Lake Folk School hopes to bring a bit of that same spirit to Salt Lake: a place where learning, creativity, and community come together for adults.
